Long ladder makes sense

Q

I’m a 58-year-old muni banker and love your stuff. One question: I thought long laddering in munis made pretty good sense if I am trying to build my own annuity for retirement, yes?

A

James A. Klotz responds:

We think your approach makes a great deal of sense.

We have no quarrel with your long term ladder because it does not sacrifice a significant amount of income, as does the five- or 10-year ladders displayed on many online brokers’ Web sites.
